The purpose of this study is to evaluate various row spacings and populations to determine which system provides the highest return on investment per acre.

2019 Kentucky Wheat Row Width and Population Study

Over the last few years, we have conducted studies to evaluate the difference in row width and population when comparing a 7.5 in. drill and a 15 in. planter. This year, instead of comparing the same populations between both row spacings, our focus was on seeds/ft. It was observed at harvest that 20 seed/ft. of row was the optimal population within both row spacings, which equates to 1.4 million seeds in a 7.5 in. row. This is very similar to what we observed in 2018. However, based on the last two years of data, when planting in 15 in. rows, you can lower seeds/A. and still have a high net return.
