The purpose of this study is to evaluate different starter fertilizer rates and their effects on yield and profitability.

2018 Southern Illinois Wheat Starter Fertilizer Rate Study

Over the last few years, starter fertilizers have shown slight yield gains in our wheat studies, but no benefit when it comes to return on investment. With that in mind, this year we tested various rates of the same starter, PureGrade® Diamond 6-24-6, to see if increasing the rate would pay off. Surprisingly enough, the highest rate tested of 4 gal./A. provided the highest yield. Studies support that higher rates of a starter fertilizer are more beneficial as the higher volumes provide better coverage, and as a result this year, more yield. We would be interested to see if we could increase yield and ROI in the future by increasing the rates even more.
