The purpose of this study is to evaluate various row spacings and populations to determine which system provides the highest return per acre.

2018 Southern Illinois Wheat Row Width and Population Study

Over the last few years, Beck’s PFR has tested different row widths and populations by nitrogen (N) rate but did not see much variance between N rates with changes in population. In 2018, we decided to change this study to evaluate populations by row width instead. In the past, some years have favored drilled wheat while other years planted wheat won out. This season, even though the drilled wheat was slower out of the ground and not nearly as uniform in emergence visually, it still yielded better with a higher return on investment (ROI) at each population. We believe this was a result of the high winds we experienced at the end of May that caused the 15 in. wheat to lodge, especially in the higher populations. Overall, our yields increased as we increased our populations, with more of an advantage to the drilled plots. Our multi-year data shows that a 1.5 million seeds/A. population on average provides yield advantage of over 3.3 Bu./A. in 15 in. wheat.
