The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of various additives, applied with a fungicide at the R3 growth stage, in an attempt to increase plant health, yield and profitability.

2018 Southern Illinois Soybean Fungicide Additive Study

There are many foliar products available that contain trace elements and other agents that enhance the uptake of foliar fungicides and micronutrients. However, these products do not always result in a positive return on investment (ROI). This year, we experienced a favorable growing season at the Southern Illinois PFR site. In this study, the addition of a fungicide resulted in a yield of 93 Bu./A. While there was no advantage to adding these additional foliar products to the spray mixture, it doesn’t mean they will never work. It simply means that nutrition was likely not a limiting factor to yield in 2018. We typically target the R3 growth stage for the application of many products because it has continued to provide the best ROI and these additives can be tank mixed with a fungicide at this growth stage. Because every season is different, it’s entirely possible that foliar applications could have provided a positive ROI if applied at other critical growth stages to help alleviate other stress.
