The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of applying a fungicide, at different times throughout the day, both with and without dew on the leaves.

2018 Ohio Corn Fungicide Study - Time of Day

Multi-location PFR data has shown that spraying a foliar fertilizer product early in the day (8:00 a.m.) provides higher yields and positive returns on investment. So, the question is, if it’s good for foliar sprays, would it also be good for fungicides? Data from 2018 is inconclusive as there was a positive yield response to fungicides sprayed in both the morning and afternoon, but the yield response was not high enough to cover the cost of the fungicide. Although there was virtually no difference between the 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. application timings, having wet leaves in the morning did not appear to have a negative consequence. This year, the Ohio PFR site did not lack for moisture and the temperature at the 3:00 p.m. application was 79°F. We do not believe that the stomata were closed and therefore, we had similar yields between the two timings. With little disease pressure at the time of application and almost no premature plant death this year, we did not see a positive return.
