The purpose of this study is to examine how planting depth impacts plant population, emergence and yield.

Consistency in soil temperature and soil moisture increase as planting depth increases. Consequently, we have found more even emergence at deeper planting depths. On the other hand, shallow planting will result in poor nodal root development which can limit nutrient uptake and potentially cause lateseason standablilty issues. Our PFR data suggests that there is a greater risk for yield loss when planting too shallow than from planting too deep.
