The purpose of this study is to evaluate various starter fertilizer placements and rates, with Precision Planting’s FurrowJet® attachments, to determine their impact on yield and profitability.

2-YEAR STARTER FERTILIZER PLACEMENT YIELD AVERAGE

Variable levels in yield response is something that is expected when using in-furrow starter fertilizers, especially when planting into warm planting conditions. Using a FurrowJet® in-furrow provides a unique application method by providing equal amounts of the starter product both directly on the seed as well as ¾ in. on each side of the seed. This application process provides instant nutrition to the germinating seeds as well as a band of nutrients once the corn root begins to establish. Although the application method is intriguing and would allow for the use of multiple products, we struggled to get a positive return on investment in this study, regardless of how the fertilizer was applied.
