The purpose of this study is to evaluate starter fertilizer placement with Precision Planting’s FurrowJet attachments to determine impact on yield and profitability.

2017 Central Illinois Corn Starter Fertilizer Placement Study - FurrowJet™

At first glance, one would expect to see a higher r esponse to a starter fertilizer with the slower emerging XL® 5828AMX™*brand. When we dug deeper into the results, however, we saw differences in root architecture that we believe were likely responsible for the yield differences between the two hybrids. BECK 6076SXbrand has an earlier developing, more penetrating root type. We feel that these characteristics allowed it to more quickly access the bands of fertilizer during the challenging cool, wet conditions following planting. We theorize that portions of the 7-22-5-.25Zn fertilizer were either unavailable or in less concentration by the time that the slower, more fibrous rooted XL® 5828AMX™*brand was able to access them.
