2016 Southern Illinois Soybean Planting Depth Study

Generally speaking, as planting depth increases, soil temperature and soil moisture tend to be more uniform. Seeds that imbibe water emerge more uniformly and have better stand establishment. The challenge with planting deep is the increased amount of time and energy required for emergence. Our soils have the potential to crust with the right weather conditions (heavy, fast rain, followed by warm temperatures), so we must be cognizant of this risk and manage accordingly.
