Does a foliar feed boost return on investment in corn and soybeans?

 

Foliar feeds in corn are designed to be added to a post-emergence herbicide application, targeted at the V4 and V5 growth stages. This is an important stage in corn ear size development as the number of rows around the ear are determined at the beginning of V6. Environmental stresses at this time could limit nutrient availability and uptake, resulting in decreased yield potential.

 

 

 

DOES A FOLIAR FEED BOOST ROI?

During the rapid growth phase (beginning about V8 in corn and flowering (R1) in soybeans) plants require large amounts of essential nutrients to sustain growth. Foliar feeds are applied before the plants enter the rapid growth phase with the goal of supplying adequate nutrients to the plants during this brief window of high demand. Foliar feeds are particularly useful when the plants have reduced access to soil nutrients, restricted root growth, dry soil conditions, high pH, or coarse-textured soils. Foliar feeds are intended to supplement, not replace, a comprehensive fertilizer program.

 

WHEN DO I APPLY A FOLIAR FEED?

Making foliar applications early in the morning (i.e. 8:00 a.m.), is more profitable than the same application made at 3:00 p.m. in both corn and soybeans. In the morning, the plant’s stomata are open, exposing the pores on the guard cells. This means that the plants are predisposed to take up nutrition products early versus later in the heat of the day.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO APPLY FOLIAR NUTRITION PRODUCTS?

Because micronutrients are required in much smaller amounts, foliar applications may be an appropriate method to feed the crop. However, some micronutrients have narrower windows of uptake, so understanding when the windows occur and matching your application timing to peak uptake is important, especially in high-yielding situations.

 

 

HOW DO I KNOW IF I MIGHT BENEFIT FROM A FOLIAR APPLICATION OF NUTRIENTS?

Taking tissue tests is one way to help guide the decision, but tissue testing by itself may not tell the entire story. Imagine driving a car without a gas gauge. If you have one gallon of gas left in the tank, the car is running fine but trouble is on the horizon. That’s the value of combining soil tests with tissue tests, it allows you to layer more information to understand if your soils may be deficient or if environmental conditions could be the cause of shortages in the plant. Having a clear picture of both tissue and soil fertility levels will help you make better decisions.
