Do biologicals or sugar in-furrow make a difference?

 

DO BIOLOGICALS OR SUGAR IN-FURROW MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Among the many different types of biologicals, some metabolize organic matter in the soil to make sugars and nutrients plant-available. Some biostimulants are enzymes and extracts that foster microbial communities. Applying biologicals and biostimulants in-furrow is done to locally increase the populations of naturally occurring organisms to expedite mineralization, thus releasing nutrients into the root zone. Applying sugar has the same goal of feeding the plant roots, but adds the sugar directly instead of through the activity of a biological. These additional sugars may also stimulate additional biological activity. Some biologicals attempt to stimulate early rooting and improve plant growth.

 

WHERE OR WHEN SHOULD I USE A BIOLOGICAL OR INOCULANT?

Regarding biological compounds, the best opportunity for an economic return likely comes from soils and situations where the native biology may be limited. This includes coarse-textured or lower organic matter soils. Soils with poor health may also benefit from a biological. Inoculants have improved dramatically over the years, such that the survivability and quantity of Bradyrhizobia in the inoculants has increased significantly. This results in positive responses, even in rotated ground. However, ground that does not have a recent history of growing soybeans or that has lower organic matter/heavy clay soils may be more responsive to inoculants.

 

 

OBSERVATION

Inoculation not only increases the total number of nodules on a soybean plant, but it aims to make the nodules more efficient by introducing elite strains of bradyrhizobia into the rooting zone.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS

 

MICROAZ-IF LIQUID™ (INOCULANT)

MicroAZ-IF Liquid is an in-furrow Azosporillum inoculant for corn. Azospirillum is a root stimulating, nitrogen-fixing bacteria. MicroAZ-IF Liquid is tank-mix compatible with most starter fertilizers.

Key Benefits: Fixes atmospheric nitrogen, stimulates root growth, accelerates germination, increases drought tolerance, and improves stand 

 

START RIGHT (BIOLOGICAL)

Start Right is a formulation of nutrients sequestered in concentrated organic acid. It is fortified with a carbon synergist, fermented plant extracts, extracts from two species of seaweed, and select soil bacteria.

Key Benefits: Provides 5-10-5 nutrition, increases yield, and contains biostimulants 

 

FEED GRADE DEXTROSE (SUGAR)

Dextrose is a sugar that is derived from corn. It is believed to be a food source for soil bacteria and helps the bacteria become more active which aids in nutrient cycling in the soil.

Key Benefits: Very soluble so it dissolves very quickly and easily into the solution 

 

EXCEED™ NANO BROWN SUGAR (SUGAR)

eXceed Nano Brown Sugar contains humic acid, molybdenum, and brown sugar. It can be used alone or mixed with other fertilizer formulations.

Key Benefits: Helps increase soil microbial activity and absorption of other nutrients 

 

NANOZYME 2.0 (BIOLOGICAL)

NanoZyme 2.0 contains humic acids and beneficial soil microbes. In addition, it contains molasses, seaweed extract, and sulfate of potash.

TERRAMAX LIQUID-IF™ (INOCULANT)

TerraMax Liquid-IF is an in-furrow soybean inoculant with stabilized Bradyrhizombium japonicum. It can be applied above, on, below, or beside the seed.
