Sugar Study

2018 Multi-Location Corn Sugar Study - Foliar

  • Kentucky
  • Ohio
  • Iowa
  • Minnesota
  • Multi-Location

The purpose of this study is to compare the use of different sugar products, applied at the V4 growth stage, and their impact on yield and profitability.

2018 RESULTS

2-YEAR MULTI-LOCATION SUGAR FOLIAR RETURN ON INVESTMENT

OBSERVATION

We theorize that plant sugars are a very important part of the plant’s growth and defense systems. Adding sugar to the leaf itself has shown mixed results over the last two years. This year, we saw a positive yield response 100 percent of the time with four different products. In 2018, eXceed Nano Brown Sugar provided the highest return on investment. Applications at the V4 growth stage would have resulted in some product being applied to the soil (in addition to the leaf), which may have helped stimulate biological activity. In addition, there could have been some response from the sugar acting as an energy source on the leaves. Plants were visibly darker at our Kentucky PFR site in the plots where Syntose FA and eXceed Nano Brown Sugar were applied, which showed positive yield results. Under wetter or drier conditions, you would possibly see more of a yield response due to the stimulation of the plant biology.
