In honor of National FFA Convention, we took the Why I Farm movement on the road. This week, we're in Louisville, KY, visiting with more than 55,000 FFA members from across the United States. And I'm sure you'll agree with me, there truly isn't a better way to honor the American farmer than starting with our nation's youth.

As I walked across the tile floor in my bare feet, it sent shivers through my spine. I quickly threw my slippers on and ran downstairs with the dog in tow. It was 6:00 a.m. and she had been trying to wake me for 30 minutes. I opened the back door to a crisp, cool breeze that nearly knocked me out of my sparkly red slippers (no, not the Dorothy kind).

Instead of getting worked up that I was now traveling at a mere two miles per hour, every few minutes on the interstate, I took in the city atmosphere. I listened as the cars in the opposite lane whizzed by at a methodical pace. With semis closing in around me, the smell of exhaust, brakes and dirty equipment took over my car. I was as far away from the country as I could get, and all I could think about was the farm.

On that Friday morning in early April, I felt like I was sitting across from my dad and brother. Although Austin is a little younger than Nathan, they're both smart men, eager to grow the farm, and prepare it for the next generation.

It’s time for another rest stop. And this time, I’m taking you to one of my favorite places – harvest. On Sunday, September 22, I looked up into the bright blue sky, closed my eyes, and took a deep breath. A sweet smell wrapped up in a cool breeze swept across my face. And just for a minute the world stopped turning.

I don’t run machinery. I’m not an agronomist. And fixing equipment, that’s what dad’s are for, right? But I do know one thing. I’m deeply passionate about our family farm. When I moved home nearly three years ago, it was to start a new job at Beck’s Hybrids. But moving home wasn’t just to start a new job; it was to be with family and to be near the farm.

I could hear the beeping off in the distance. It was faint, but I knew it was there. After what seemed like an hour the beeping stopped. And even though silence can be eerie, this time it was peaceful. My mind started to relax, slowly drifting off into another world.

I’m guilty. No, I didn’t commit a crime, although I did eat a small container of cookie dough ice cream last weekend. It’s equal to like two scoops, right? What I am guilty of is working on Sundays.

I’ll be the first to admit, and I’m sure my husband will agree, having patience isn’t one of my best attributes. It’s something, that over the years, I’ve had to cultivate. And even though I firmly believe I acquired this trait from my dad, he is also one of the most patient people I know.

It’s time for a rest stop. And if you’re like me on a long road trip, you need time to stretch your legs, grab a drink of water, and maybe even an ice cream cone. But I’m not going to take you to just any rest stop; I’m going to take you to the greatest spectacle in the agriculture industry - Farm Progress Show.

It’s been six years since I became a graduate of Purdue University. Since then I’ve traveled more times than I can remember, moved to two different states, changed jobs three times, encountered numerous challenges, and had some of the best moments of my life.

What is it about a southern farmer that just makes them entirely charming? Is it their southern drawl, laid back personality, or how they never make you feel like a stranger? It was the first Saturday in April when I traveled 5 ½ hours south to visit Mark Thomas of Princeton, KY.

Have you ever asked yourself why you’re in the job you’re in? Is it to provide for your family? Is it a job you’re passionate about? Or maybe you don’t even consider your job a job because you love what you’re doing.
