I have always been enamored with the Christmas season. As a child, I was enchanted by the stories of watchful elves, dancing nutcrackers, and flying sleighs. As an adult, I still find myself charmed by these stories, but even more so, charmed by the ambiance of this season. Christmas in college is much different than Christmas as a kid, but in some very special, wonderful ways. Read below as a give my Top Five Reasons Why Christmas Is Even Better as a College Student.

"Wake up in the morning and say 'Good morning, God' Instead of 'Good God, morning' & your day will go better." These words struck me as soon as Orion Samuelson, long-time host of the U.S. Farm Report, said them. Sometimes, all you need is a bit of perspective, and for me, it comes in the form of the annual Agriculture Future of America Conference.

The “gypsy life” is a lifestyle that I am beginning to understand very well. This week, I found myself making several trips between school, home, and the beautiful back roads of Indiana. While on the road, I was lucky enough to have a special copilot with me—my grandfather, Gary.

Three things usually accompany any college girl on campus during fall: a good pair of yoga pants, a warm cup of coffee, and a colorfully decorated and adorned laptop. I would know because as I sit here writing this blog, I am guilty of sporting all the above. Though each of these are addicting, carrying my laptop wherever I go has become more like a clingy relationship than a healthy habit. So this semester, I am saying bye-bye to my beloved laptop and hello to the rest of the World.

Growing up on the family farm, I always knew I wanted to be a part of the agricultural industry. Couple this with my love for writing and it almost seems that the agricultural communication major was made just for me. Agriculture not only led me to my course of study, but also to one of the best universities in the nation—The Ohio State University (Go Bucks!).
As students at OSU, we are challenged in our classes, organizations and jobs to not only further our social development, but our professional careers as well. It is because of this push that I attended The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences Career Fair this past fall.

Have you ever attended Becknology Days? Each year, Beck's puts on several different field shows throughout the Midwest, but Becknology Days is an event held at the home site in Atlanta, Ind. Visitors have the opportunity to experience a perfect blend of agronomics, new product information, and educational seminars with their success in mind. There are also many activities for families and children, as well as great food and a great atmosphere.
This is my first experience at Becknology Days and I am having a wonderful time. Check out some photos I snapped yesterday while at the event.

This week I took some time to be at home, not only to catch up with family and friends, but also to visit Ohio State and prepare for the upcoming semester. As I walked throughout campus, I wasn't just thinking about this fall, but the final week of my internship that is coming much too soon.
It is surreal that almost four months have passed. It doesn’t seem all that long ago that I was getting my stuff ready to head to Indiana for the summer. How can I possibly be packing up to head back to school for the fall?

On a daily basis I seem to be asking myself one important question. "Did you know?" And it's usually in regards to agriculture. The more questions I ask, the more answers I seek. As a writer, this is a way for me to brainstorm. What better place than to both brainstorm and save my ideas than with the social media site, Pinterest?
I use Pinterest to gain both ideas and insight. These ideas sometimes serve as inspiration for my daily writing responsibilities at Beck’s. As an avid “pinner”, I wanted to share with you some inspirational content I stumbled upon. These are messages that make me smile when I think about life in the country and help me keep my writing in perspective.

“The media” is a hot topic in most of my classes and lectures throughout the school year. On a daily basis, professors teach students how to interact and work with the media.
But no matter though how much students prepare for media interaction and events in class, nothing compares to actually learning in the field. This past week I had the opportunity to join Beck's at the 2014 Ag Media Summit held in Indianapolis, IN.

If you opened the dictionary and turned to the word perfectionist, you would see my picture right beside it. I do not like leaving projects hanging or half done. This was just how I was raised. My mom’s motto was always if you can’t give something your all, then there’s no need to be doing it. This is a philosophy that I continue to carry with me each day. I have learned though that giving it your all doesn’t mean you won’t make mistakes. And you know what? That’s ok.

To a certain extent, I think everyone has a picture in their mind of what their life is going to be. Sure, no one knows exactly what’s going to happen, but I think most college students picture a dream job in their future. No matter if that dream job involves a high-class office in the big city, or a big green tractor out in the field, most of these dreams seem pretty glamorous, majestic even. This summer while interning at Beck's, I’ve learned that behind every awesome job is a pair of rolled up sleeves and muddy work boots. Because sometimes, life looks a lot like work.

Before coming to Beck’s, I never had the opportunity to see a campaign launch. Sure, I have worked on marketing materials before, but I never knew what it meant to go “live”. It’s been a couple weeks now since the launch of this year’s Why I Farm campaign and I have had ample time to see everything unfold. It’s hard to describe the satisfaction in watching a project you have worked on become a reality—but I can tell you, it’s an awesome feeling.

Music has always been one of my true loves. As a baby, I wouldn’t fall asleep until a John Denver song could be heard lightly playing in the background and I was famous for my performances in front of the television dancing along to CMT. I can always count on country music to have a song that speaks to my life. Today this seems especially true as our nation celebrates Independence Day.

The marketing department was beyond busy this week due to the launch of the new Why I Farm video. Walking over to the research building, in the rain may I add, was not on the top of my list Tuesday. In fact, for a minute I brooded about the weather, the week and my sheer- dumb luck. It wasn't till I was almost to the building that I finally looked up from the wet ground.

Growing up, I played a lot of sports, but softball and tennis were my favorites. Being on a team meant you won, lost and worked your butts off together. This is where I first learned about the concept of teamwork. If you are competitive like me, playing team sports made it clear you couldn't win the game on your own. The same holds true as I transition into the working world.

Yesterday I had another opportunity to travel with Beck’s. Instead of a road trip, we hit the skies to travel to the Kentucky Practical Farm Research site. It was an experience that I will never forget. Take a look at my Photo Friday recap of the trip.

Writer’s block. Two little words that tend to throw a wrench in my daily plans. As a marketing intern at Beck’s I spend most of my time producing copy, which comes in the form of scripts, news articles, social media posts, and of course, blogging. When I’m on a roll, I absolutely love writing. In fact, one of my first memories as a little girl is entering my very own “book” into the Reading Rainbow story competition.

Yesterday was an abnormal work day for me. My stubbornness had let a tooth ache go for a little too long and I found myself in the dentist’s office for most of the afternoon. When I finally returned to Beck’s the day was really just beginning.

While I was in high school, social media was becoming the “it” online experience. MySpace was out and Facebook was in. I remember having to beg, plead and promise to be my mom’s “friend” before she would allow me to have my very own Facebook account. Back then I used Facebook to chat with friends, post pictures and ultimately, keep myself in the loop.

Like any other intern, I started my onboarding week with a goal to please. I sat through session after session, listened to every presenter that walked through the door, and tried my hardest to impress whomever I came in contact with. For me, an internship at Beck’s Hybrids was like a golden door to success. Great company. Great atmosphere. And most importantly, a great resume builder.
