CropTalk: Input Selection: Adapting to the Times

December 2022

Author: Luke Schulte

In these times of unusually high input prices and commodity price uncertainty, crop input selection becomes even more crucial. Often, as we feel pressure to tighten our belts regarding input decisions, we resort to scrutinizing those that are less visual and believed to be less impactful. For example, altering a herbicide program or lowering the amount of applied nitrogen (N) will often visually show the impact of our decision. That said, managing soil fertility is one of those inputs where “pulling back” is not as obvious as to the impact.

CropTalk: The Sower

December 2022

...In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. (John 1:1-5) Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

Many things over the course of history in PFR have come and gone with interest, but if there’s one thing that keeps coming up in the fall, it’s residue management. It’s never an easy one-size-fits-all answer, no pun intended! When we think about the ways we can manage it, there are several different strategies that we can incorporate beginning right at harvest.

CropTalk: FARMserver® in the Fall: What do you do now?

November 2022

You’ve worked hard all year long to track what you planted, where you planted it, what you applied, where you applied it, and finally, what you harvested. That is a lot of work to let go to waste. Not having a place to store and analyze your data or giving your data to someone else and have to wait for the results to come back can be quite frustrating after the countless hours and effort you have put into your operation all season long.Y

CropTalk: The Sower

November 2022

“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” James 2:14-17

CropTalk: Yield Components of Corn

October 2022

Author: Jon Skinner

Yield of corn, measured in bushels per acre, is something that farmers strive to maximize each year. And while some components are set based on the genetics of the hybrids planted and environmental conditions (weather, soil type, water holding capacity, etc.), there are numerous management practices that can positively influence the yield of corn.

CropTalk: Chicken Soup For the Farmer's Soul

September 2022

Author: Maggie Holt

On August 1, Beck’s officially launched our “Just Believe” campaign with messaging driven from Bible verse Mark 5:36, “Don’t be afraid. Just believe.” We had one single objective with this campaign; to encourage all farmers to “remember, He created you for this.” And while some of our dealers and employees had been privy to a sneak peek, our marketing team eagerly anticipated the video release and the feedback such a bold campaign would garner. But while monitoring our social media accounts in the days following the launch, I felt something I never expected…

CropTalk: 7 Tips for Combine Preparation

September 2022

Several thoughts come to mind when I start thinking about harvest. The long hours, the constant hustle, seeing the results of the season’s toils firsthand, and most importantly, turning the chapter on another season are just a few that come to mind. It’s important to prepare for the harvest season. It takes many pieces of equipment for harvest to flow quickly, efficiently, and safely. Trucks, tractors, grain carts, and augers must work in unison for a seamless harvest. Of course, the kingpin of the whole operation is the combine. Proper maintenance when it comes to combine prep cannot be understated. Here are seven tips to ensure tip-top combine performance.

CropTalk: The Worth of Water

September 2022

Author: Marcie Oelke

Following Beck’s westward expansion last fall, the Nebraska team has hit the ground running. Mark Pieper and crew have done an exceptional job finding the right people who get the privilege of introducing Beck’s to the state. The reaction from the farming community has been remarkable, and growers are excited about our diverse genetic lineup and the idea of working with a company culture founded on faith. The expansion added over 15 million corn and soybean acres to Beck’s marketing territory and, with it, many unique agricultural challenges and opportunities.
