Early N Results in Corn

Author: Alex Knight

After a season of what felt like never ending rain, one question on everyone’s mind is, how much nitrogen (N) was lost? Will the economic optimum nitrogen rates (EONR) be higher this year? Will late season N pay more in 2017? How much did genetics play a role in our N response? We hope to address all of these questions with the data gleaned from our PFR studies.

NEW Wheat Studies!

Author: Alex Knight

In spring of 2017, multiple PFR Proven™ products and practices were identified for wheat. One of these practices included the application of fungicide at flowering (Feekes 10.5.1) with proven products including Caramba® and Prosaro® 421 SC. As a result of the success with these fungicide products and the practice of applying them at flowering, Beck’s Practical Farm Research (PFR)® team wanted to determine if applying them even earlier could be a PFR Proven practice.

Foliar Fungicide Applications

Author: Alex Knight

In this latest PFR report, I discuss the Fungicide Placement Study in OH where we are comparing the 360 UNDERCOVER vs Over the Top application of Headline AMP® at the VT growth stage. Are there coverage differences between the two applications? Will there be a difference in yield?

Managing Marestail

Author: Joe Bolte

When it comes to growing double crop soybeans, one hurdle many growers face is weed control. One of the most challenging weeds to manage in a double crop soybean system is marestail. In fact, some biotypes of marestail have developed resistance to Group 2 (ALS) herbicides, which are the most commonly applied in wheat. If a population is resistant, the weeds will escape the herbicide application and thus, will be well-established at wheat harvest. The larger the weed, the more difficult it is for contact herbicides to have effective control.

Herbicide Damage

Dicamba drift has been a hot topic throughout the Midwest over the last few weeks as many farmers have been experiencing herbicide damage to their soybean fields. When evaluating your fields, it’s important to keep in mind that there are other herbicides on the market that may cause similar symptomology, leading to confusion.

In this latest PFR Report, PFR Operations Manager, Jason Gahimer, introduces part 2 of Beck’s new PFR project, a multi-row width, multi-hybrid planter!

In conjunction with Schlipf Precision Ag, Harvest International, Yetter Co., and Precision Planting, Beck’s is excited to announce this exciting new project.

We have done a lot of research over the years on row spacing and population and have found that we can produce high yields when planting in 30 in. rows compared to 20 in. rows, but there are still some advantages with narrower row spacing. This new planter will allow us to plant in 10 in., 20 in., and 30 in. rows on the fly throughout the field in order to identify the zones, spacing, and seeding rates that will maximize our yields.

Join us for part two of this series, featuring Precision Planting’s General Manger, Brad Arnold, and Research Agronomist, Cory Muhlbauer to learn more about the components that are going onto the Harvest International planter bar.

2017 PFR Wheat Book

Author: Alex Knight

This year, a total of 15 studies were conducted across four of our six Practical Farm Research (PFR)® sites, as shown below. As a result of these studies, we have identified two new PFR Proven™ products, based on their yield results and return on investment (ROI). With all four sites having completed wheat harvest, our team is moving quickly on the 2017 PFR Wheat Book, and we can’t wait to share the results with you. In the meantime, we have highlighted some of the information below.

NITROGEN APPLICATIONS; HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF

Author: Jim Schwartz

Winston Churchill once said, “those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” History is for self-knowledge…after all. The only clues to the future that are offered to us are our past experiences. The value of history is that it teaches us how to improve based on our past. This lesson has never felt more applicable than it does this year.

Rain, Rain, Go Away

Author: Jim Schwartz

There is no better time to experience the benefits of water management than after a big rainfall event. And Mother Nature has provided more than enough of those this season.

Fields across the Midwest have been flooded and tractors put on standby as farmers across the Corn Belt waited out torrential rains and wet fields over the last few weeks. Some fields however, fared better than others. Their secret you ask? Well water management of course!
