Soybean yields ultimately depend on the number and weight of the seeds harvested per acre. Soybean yield is determined by nodes per acre (plants per acre x nodes per plant), pods per node, seeds per pod, and seed weight.

Corn grain yield, typically measured in bushels per acre, can be broken down into distinct components that each contribute to the weight of harvested grain. While genetics govern some yield components, much of the harvested yield is directly affected by environmental conditions and management practices. Yield components include number of plants per acre, number of ears per plant, the number of kernels per ear, and the weight of each kernel.

Often, when farmers hear the word nematodes, their minds gravitate towards soybeans; however, there are multiple plant-parasitic nematodes that cause serious damage to the corn plant. The level of injury and yield reduction to the corn crop will depend on the species of nematode present as well as the population of those nematodes; other in-season plant stresses exacerbate nematode pressure. Over the past decade, we have seen a shift to more corn acres, which ultimately makes these nematodes even more important to understand.

We are quickly approaching the time when corn tassels will be emerging and the fruit of our labor will be apparent. In this case, the fruit will be freshly pollinated ears of corn. The appearance of post-pollination ears can tell us a lot about how successful pollination was. There’s more to it than just an ear full of yellow kernels. We can use some of these visual clues to diagnose a problem that may have occurred during a crucial time in the corn plant’s life cycle.

Every day, we swim through a soup of gases, and nearly 80% is elemental nitrogen, N2. This nitrogen (N) gas is two molecules of N connected by an incredibly strong triple bond. Humans have only had the technology to transform atmospheric N into biologically-available forms for less than 80 years, and it comes at enormous costs. So, despite that 80% of the air the plant encounters, in the stomata of the leaf or the pore spaces in the soil, is pure N, plants have no way to tap into the infinite supply of N2.

What is your biggest yield-limiting factor in an individual field? As I have asked farmers this question, the answers I’ve received are all over the board. Several of the more common responses include emergence, drainage, soil type, sunlight, fertility, diseases, and, of course, the weather. It should be noted that for every yield limiting factor, there is a corresponding corn or soybean characteristic that can help to overcome that factor — even the weather.
