What has three years of implementing water management practices at our Practical Farm Research (PFR)® facility in southern Illinois (SIL) taught us? That in environments that struggle with drainage, tile has payed dividends. Despite the common belief that tile does not work on clay pan soils, our data has proved otherwise.
So, the question is, why did tile work? To gain a better understanding, we must first dig deeper into the soil moisture and temperature data we have gathered over the past three years with CropX LLC moisture sensors.

For years, soybeans have not received the same love that corn has, and is often referred to as “that crop between corn crops.” It’s not uncommon for many farmers to plant all their corn before even thinking about starting on soybeans, and in most cases, the care or precision dedicated to soybean fields is nowhere near what it is when planting corn. Recently, however, some of the more progressive farmers throughout the Midwest have been giving soybeans a little more love.

Unlike corn and soybeans, there hasn't been a lot of work done to determine the optimum planting date, row width or populations for wheat. Until now. Beck’s PFR started their Wheat Planting Date Study in 2017 and will be continuing that study, along with a row width and population study this year.

Planting depth for row crops is a main topic of discussion in the agricultural community. Beck’s PFR team has heard your questions and in response, has put planting depth to yet another test. You may have seen our planting depth data over the last few years, but this year we added a second planting date into the mix. For this study, we planted corn in April and in May. In April, we tend to see cooler, wetter soils whereas in May we sometimes experience drier periods with less rainfall and warmer soil temperatures. Soil temperature and moisture have a great effect on how plants emerge. In this study, we looked to evaluate how much soil conditions can affect plant emergence, and how much yield potential we lose with late-emerging plants.

Based on the numerous requests received from farmers, Beck’s PFR team is testing the Mandako Landroller for the first time this year. We launched this study in an effort to determine if Land Rollers would provide any yield benefit to a soybean crop.

In times of lower commodity prices, it’s important for farmers to look for efficient ways that they can cut costs without impacting their crop. One area farmers can consider cutting soybean costs is in their fall burndown programs. Before making such a decision, however, it’s important to evaluate the benefits of a fall burndown.
Two years ago, Sonny Beck challenged our Practical Farm Research (PFR)® team to raise 400-bushel corn. Unlike all the other studies done in PFR, economics and profitability have little influence on this particular study. Instead, the focus here is solely on maximizing yield by utilizing non-traditional management practices in combinations that may be unpractical in today’s economy.

As farmers, we do our best to create an environment that encourages positive plant responses like higher yields. For example, we may alter the environment by planting a different population, utilizing a new method of working soil or, perhaps the most obvious, adding a fertilizer. All of this is done in the hopes that the plant’s response, or its phenotypic alteration in response to its environment, creates additional yield and profit.
