If you watched the 2021 PFR Insight meetings, you know by now that FARMserver® is rolling out a whole new feature this spring. The Growth Model in FARMserver takes several pieces of information and uses it to predict the growth stage of each field. We’re nothing short of excited to tell you about it!

While we all know about our yield monitor’s ability to generate yield maps, yield monitors and other precision ag tools can offer other benefits as well. And while yield maps are certainly powerful pieces of information, just as important is the information that helps understand why a field or area of a field performed the way that it did. Beck’s offers a precision ag tool called FARMserver® that can not only process your yield maps but also help to answer the “why” question. Here are three steps you can take now to help make the most of what your yield monitor and FARMserver have to offer during harvest.

We're always looking for ways to make things more efficient, profitable, and sustainable. One of the major challenges we face as farmers is making the decision to purchase a new technology for our planter, sprayer, or combine. Then, after our purchase, the challenge is in determining if it's providing us with the advertised return on investment (ROI).

2019
The wild weather of 2019 created challenging conditions, which caused many to implement unconventional practices on some farms. Heavy downpours on tight Midwestern clay soils delayed planting in much of our marketing area, and the shorter planting windows left farmers wondering, “Should I switch my corn hybrids to shorter-season maturities?” This question prompted our Practical Farm Research (PFR)® team at Beck’s to organize a delayed planting hybrid response study.

This season has been one for the record books for nearly every state in the Corn Belt. Extreme rainfall and delayed planting forced many farmers to plant well into June and in some cases, July. As every seasoned farmer knows, conditions like what we saw in 2019 will have consequences. A carefully laid fall harvest plan will help to limit further losses come harvest time. If we look back one year to 2018, many of these same environmental conditions occurred across Southern Minnesota and Northern Iowa. There are lessons to learn and adapt to help us be more successful in 2019 across the Midwest.

Soils are anything but monolithic; chemistry, soil type, management history, and, ultimately, yield potential vary acre by acre and inch by inch. Farmers must balance the precision of intensive sampling with the expense of sampling and the practicality of actionable management units.

This spring, Beck’s Practical Farm Research (PFR)® team is testing new equipment technology. Jared Chester, PFR Location Lead in London, OH, gives an overview of our study on Yetter’s 2984 Strip Freshener. Just a week after using this equipment, we already see a difference. The question is will this visual difference translate to increased yield this fall. Stay tuned for updates on this study in the coming months.

We get a lot of questions about new planter technologies. What works and what is all hype? In this edition of Beck’s PFR Report, Brady Rogers, PFR Operator, and Brady Rogers, PFR Location Lead in Atlanta, IN, share insights on the latest planter technologies we are putting to the test this spring.

Rolling ground is always an interesting topic of discussion. If you talk to farmers in the Northern U.S., they’ll say it’s a great way to push down rocks and create better field conditions for planting any crop, as well as for harvesting soybeans. Farmers further south will say it can promote branching and increase soybean yields when rolling once the soybeans are up.

Across the Midwest, finding a window to do field activity has been very challenging this spring. Many farmers find themselves wondering if they should change any of their management strategies as planting continues to be delayed. But, before you make any changes to your 2019 plans, let’s discuss some factors that could influence your growing season.

Looking ahead to the 2019 growing season, profitably should be on the mind of every farmer. Some questions that might be top of mind include: “Will it be more profitable to plant corn or soybeans? From fertilizer programs, nitrogen decisions, chemical programs, to seed, what is the magic recipe for profitably for 2019?” Knowing that every farm and field is different, there aren’t always easy answers to those questions.

2017
For a large part of the Midwest, the 2017 planting season has been one for the record books. Unfortunately, for all the wrong reasons. When we drive from area to area, we are seeing corn plants in a wide array of stages. Uneven stands and multiple planting dates can wreak havoc on deciding when to apply a fungicide. If you have been following Beck’s Practical Farm Research (PFR)®, we are seeing a positive ROI when we have applied fungicide at the VT growth stage. Over the last four years, we have seen a 9.4 Bu./A. advantage applying Headline AMP® at the right time, making this one of our PFR Proven™ products. Now the question to ask yourself is, how can I apply fungicide at the correct time with all the replant and unevenness in my fields?
