CropTalk: New Players in Fungicides

June 2020

Did you know that around 10% of the total estimated corn and soybean bushels are lost yearly to various diseases? According to the Crop Protection Network, 10% has been the average yearly loss since the group of extension specialists across the country started summarizing their data at the end of each year. With that being said, the fungicide market has exploded over the last 10 to 15 years as the industry and farmers alike try to maximize bushels on the farm and fi ght off disease. One of the best parts of my job is getting to have a hand in our Practical Farm Research (PFR)®, which is a tool to help farmers make decisions on products and practices each year. As new products come onto the market, we have an opportunity with PFR to put them to the test against products that have already proven to be profitable.

PFR Report: Sequential Fungicide Applications on Soybeans

The spring of 2019 has been nothing but challenging for most Midwest farmers. Because of these challenges, we could see more soybean diseases. Because we experienced plenty of rainfall both before planting and after soybean emergence, certain diseases like phytophthora root and stem rot, brown stem rot, rhizoctonia, brown spot, and white mold could show up in soybean fields. These diseases prefer wet/saturated environments and spells of cool/humid conditions. As a result, crop management throughout the growing season will be key to protecting yield potential.

NEW Wheat Studies!

Author: Alex Knight

In spring of 2017, multiple PFR Proven™ products and practices were identified for wheat. One of these practices included the application of fungicide at flowering (Feekes 10.5.1) with proven products including Caramba® and Prosaro® 421 SC. As a result of the success with these fungicide products and the practice of applying them at flowering, Beck’s Practical Farm Research (PFR)® team wanted to determine if applying them even earlier could be a PFR Proven practice.
