Husband. Soon-to-be dad. Farmer. Friend. Business owner. Minnesota native. Beck’s dealer.

Nick Gerdes is a man that wears many hats. He shows up for his family, customers, and community surrounding the Jordan, Minnesota, area. He’s good-hearted, passionate about helping others, and kind.

He’s also the 2021 Jordan Commercial Club’s Agriculturalist of the Year.

The Jordan Commercial Club was established over 100 years ago. The organization is made up of over 50 individuals with various roles across the community and who all have roots in Jordan. Their goal? To serve the members of the Jordan community by making Jordan a better place to live, work and play.

Each year, the club hosts its annual “Distinguished Service Award” Banquet, where they honor a trio of individuals that make a difference in the Jordan community. These awards honor those who go above and beyond in community service and service to the agricultural community.

Nick Gerdes, a young 30-year-old farmer and business owner, was one of the youngest recipients of the historical award. In addition to running his Beck’s dealership, he also runs an equipment dealership that focuses on buying, selling, and servicing used equipment.

“I have always had an interest in machinery,” Gerdes said. “Back in high school, I found a good deal online to purchase my first piece of equipment. It was a 4420 John Deere Combine. A buddy and I went down to Iowa to pick it up and haul it home. I ended up fixing it up and making a pretty good return…the rest is history.”

Nick started his machinery business after high school and has continued to expand into other agricultural business ventures. Three years ago, Nick established his Beck’s dealership. He felt that his current company values aligned with Beck’s culture and that there was a strong mutual understanding of putting the customer first.

“Nick does a great job of utilizing Practical Farm Research (PFR)® and FARMserver® in his own operation to show his equipment and seed customers the benefits of the programs.” Seed Advisor Andrew Usher says. “He has even made plans to purchase a new sprayer to show his customers how they can increase their return on investment (ROI)...and he is doing it because he truly just wants his customers to be successful.”

Nick continues to be a role model for others through his community involvement. In addition to helping farmers succeed through assisting with equipment, seed, and operating his own farming operation, he is also a member of the Scott County Fair Board.

“It doesn’t really come as a shock that Nick is a recipient of this award,” says Seed Advisor Andrew Usher. “His service to others is magnetizing.”
