Looking Past The Numbers

Inspiration By Procrastination

Published on Monday, January 20, 2014

I’ll be honest, I was putting off writing my blog today because I wasn’t sure exactly what subject to focus on. So instead of grabbing my laptop and trying to type something up, I watched a movie instead. The movie was about a woman that was battling to become sober. She found that many things and people seemed to be stacked against her efforts to become sober. Despite those many obstacles, the movie ended up with her celebrating her one year anniversary of sobriety.

As I watched the movie, I felt a definite inspiration for my blog coming over me. You see, over the last year I have been fortunate to lose over 100 pounds! I am very proud of my accomplishment, but my true inspiration for today’s blog is the unbelievable amount of support I have received over this journey of losing weight.

The movie was unfortunately very real to life for many people. I’m sure that people try to make improvements in their lives only to feel as if they’re not supported along their way. I can most assuredly say that my journey was very different from those situations in that at every turn I found words of encouragement and people interested in my success.

My wonderful wife, Sarah, has always been a tremendous support to me in whatever I have done. And she has certainly been a tremendous help in my weight loss journey – from giving me pep talks, to helping me choose healthier options, to allowing me to constantly take her to Subway restaurant so that I can find healthier fast food options. Her passion for fitness and healthy choices is certainly rubbing off on me and I hope that I can do her proud over the next year in maintaining my healthier lifestyle.

In addition to my wife, lots of other family members have been very supportive in their words of encouragement along my journey. Simply saying thank you to all of them probably does not do justice to the amount of encouragement they have provided. I certainly appreciate everything my family has done on this journey.

And I couldn’t write this blog without also recognizing the awesome family that I work for and the amount of support they have provided. Whether it is the gym, the healthy options they provide in the cafeteria, or exercise classes, the Beck family has definitely provided the avenue for success on this journey. They have even provided the wonderful resource that is our health coach Lyndsay. Starting where I did on my weight loss journey I was fortunate enough to meet with Lyndsay on a monthly basis to discuss my journey. She has been a great source of information and a great sounding board to discuss healthier options in my weight loss journey. Thank you to Lyndsay, the health committee and the Beck family for the help you have all provided.

“Wow, I barely recognized you!” “Seriously, how much weight have you lost”? “How have you been doing all of this?” Are just a few of the many things I have heard from co-workers and customers as they see me for the first time in several months. It has been awesome to share my story with so many people that I come in contact with working for Beck’s. Many times when they first ask the question, they may not have anticipated the lengthy response that was on the way. Even though I am sure many people I have told my story too have probably gotten a little tired of hearing about it, they have all been gracious enough to listen and shared words of encouragement.

Additionally, I appreciate all of my co-workers who have kept me motivated through fitness challenges and competitions along the way. Great job by the way to all of my co-workers who have also lost weight and made healthier choices over the last year. I am not alone in this journey, and many others deserve a lot of attention for the efforts they have put in as well.

The movie that inspired me to write this blog made me realize how fortunate I have been by getting support along the way. Many people I came into contact with probably didn’t even realize how helpful they were in keeping me inspired to keep working at the weight loss. I not only thank all of you, but I challenge you to keep encouraging people when you see those making positive changes. Simple things like listening to someone tell their story and telling them great job can make a world of difference in the way of inspiration.

And to all of you reading this blog, thank you for letting me share, and thank you for encouraging those you come into contact with.

congratulations, Doug!! Great post, and what an awesome victory. Sometimes it's hard to remember that we didn't pick up these extra pounds in one week and therefore we're not going to lose them in one week, either.

Enjoy the healthier you, and again congratulations.

Good for you Doug! Now you can sneak into band alumni functions without anyone knowing who you are. Until you start talking! :)
