CropTalk: Soybeans And The Freedom To Operate

May 2019

In the world of horse racing, there is a term for an underdog that emerges as a winner: dark horse. As we survey the landscape of soybeans, the LibertyLink® GT27™ trait is clearly the dark horse of soybean technologies. It may not be a household name when it comes to soybean platforms, but it is certainly at the top of the list when it comes to bringing great value to our customers.

Complete Weed Control
LibertyLink GT27 soybeans carry tolerance to glyphosate and Liberty® herbicides for post-emergence applications. Both herbicides are broad spectrum and, when combined, offer control of a very wide range of weed species. Additionally, a pre-emerge label is being pursued for a Group 27 herbicide, which is an HPPD chemistry. Currently, farmers planting LibertyLink GT27 soybeans are able to use other outstanding pre-emerge herbicides, such as Zidua® Pro, in their weed control program.

The use of pre-emerge herbicides add multiple sites of action (SOA) to help fight weed resistance, as well as provide protection from yield-robbing, earlyseason weed pressure. This application could then be followed up in crop with Liberty and/or glyphosate for a complete weed management system. The multiyear Practical Farm Research (PFR)® data in Figure 1 illustrates the value of multiple SOAs in a pre-emerge weed control system.

Great Genetics. Superior Agronomics.
Soybeans in Beck's Freedom Plus™ series feature the LibertyLink GT27 technology, strong agronomics, and high-yield potential, and their performance is second to none. The current class of products going into the ground for 2019 planting were among the top performing lines in Beck’s replicated research program from 2018 harvest.

Additionally, there is a wave of new and exciting releases coming for 2020 planting, which demonstrate even more yield potential and improved agronomics. The yield and performance of Beck's Freedom Plus soybean series, along with the herbicide tolerances, make this system a top value for our customers.

Figure 2 highlights select Beck's Freedom Plus series soybeans to varieties in our current Libertylink® lineup. The LibertyLink GT27 soybeans show strong genetic gains across the relative maturity spectrum, including Group 1 and Group 2 soybeans not featured below.
