Weed Management Brief: CARRIER RATE - LIBERTY + GLYPHOSATE

Published on Thursday, October 15, 2020

ABSTRACT:

  1. Liberty® is effective on glyphosate-resistant (GR) weeds. Adding glyphosate increases efficacy on weeds that Liberty is weaker on, such as grasses.

  2. Manage a Liberty® + glyphosate application the same as a Liberty alone application, and spray at 20 GPA.

  3. Spray when weeds are less than 4 in. tall to reduce antagonism on grasses and other weeds.

LIBERTY + GLYPHOSATE

Glyphosate is effective on many of the same weeds on which Liberty is weaker, like grasses, velvetleaf, etc. Therefore, manage a Liberty + glyphosate application just like Liberty alone, since the Liberty is doing the heavy lifting. AMS, nozzle selection, time of day, and targeting weeds less than 4 in. in height is critical for success. If weeds become too large, grass control will be reduced and the glyphosate application should be made on a separate trip. Concerning the correct carrier rate, Liberty and glyphosate both have different requirements when it comes to spray volume.

2020 RESULTS

In this study, waterhemp control increased as coverage increased in the Liberty + glyphosate applications. With lower spray rates of Liberty alone, we saw a decrease in fall panicum control, but when adding glyphosate, control remained consistent across the various spray rates. This is because glyphosate is systemic and fall panicum control was not impacted by spray volume. Glyphosate has limited efficacy on GR weeds, so effective Liberty control is necessary (20 GPA).

CONCLUSION

Liberty® is doing the heavy lifting, so Liberty + glyphosate applications must be managed like a Liberty application (20 GPA, ams, nozzle, etc.). Best rate? Use 1.125 lb. a.e. glyphosate for every 32 oz. of Liberty. If weeds become too large, antagonism can occur so applications should be made separately.
