Spring Reminders for Planting

Published on Thursday, April 14, 2016

Finally, that time of year has arrived... planting season! With many farmers preparing to plant and others already rolling through the field, there are a few things to keep in mind this spring. The first is to get your planter set. It’s always wise to inspect your planter and service it before you have half your crop planted. Remember, if your crop gets off to a bad start you’ll be chasing lost yield for the rest of the year. Second, start clean and stay clean. Whether you are using LibertyLink®, Roundup Ready®, conventional, or non-GMO, it’s important to maintain weed control throughout the season. Finally, monitor the environment. This can be turning your pivots on if it starts getting dry or replacing nutrients you may have lost because it’s been too wet. Since it doesn’t look like commodity prices are going up anytime soon, the biggest thing is to monitor your input costs. Don’t make any decisions that aren’t backed by long-term research and a positive return on investment
