2017 Iowa Soybean Planting Date Study
The purpose of this study is to determine the optimum planting date window by planting multiple dates throughout the growing season.
One way to potentially increase soybean yields is to plant them relatively early in the season; even at the same time that we are planting corn. Later planted soybeans intercept less light and are more likely to be flowering during very hot and dry periods. This leads to decreased pod counts, and subsequently, decreased yield. This year we saw our optimal planting dates range from April 1 to May 15, with our highest yielding trials planted on April 22. A third year of testing will give us a very good understanding of our optimal planting window for central Iowa.
