Starter Fertilizer Study

2017 Southern Illinois Soybean Starter Fertilizer Study

  • Southern IL

The purpose of this study is to evaluate various soybean starter fertilizers, applied in-furrow, and their effects on yield and profitability.

OBSERVATION

While we normally don’t consider soybeans to be as population sensitive as corn, we observed significant yield increases with starter fertilizers that positively impacted the emerged population. BECK 394L4brand responded well to starter fertilizers this year, which was likely due to the heavy rainfall and cool temperatures that immediately followed planting. In the case of BECK 366L4brand, similar yield levels were observed between treatments even though significant stand loss occurred with starter applications. This demonstrates that soybeans have the ability to branch and compensate in low populations.
