Counting Macros

Author: Jim Schwartz

No, this isn’t an article about healthy food choices to lower your cholesterol, control high blood pressure, or to set a calorie goal.

However, feeding a crop and managing its diet is just as important as feeding our own families and making sure they are healthy. Just because my corn looks fine, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it has everything it needs to grow strong and healthy. So, how does soil fertility play into the health and well-being of the crops we grow?

Corn Planting Depth by Date

Author: Jim Schwartz

Planting depth for row crops is a main topic of discussion in the agricultural community. Beck’s PFR team has heard your questions and in response, has put planting depth to yet another test. You may have seen our planting depth data over the last few years, but this year we added a second planting date into the mix. For this study, we planted corn in April and in May. In April, we tend to see cooler, wetter soils whereas in May we sometimes experience drier periods with less rainfall and warmer soil temperatures. Soil temperature and moisture have a great effect on how plants emerge. In this study, we looked to evaluate how much soil conditions can affect plant emergence, and how much yield potential we lose with late-emerging plants.

PFR Report: 2017-2018 Nitrogen Rate Results on Wheat

Author: Jim Schwartz

As farmers, we do our best to create an environment that encourages positive plant responses like higher yields. For example, we may alter the environment by planting a different population, utilizing a new method of working soil or, perhaps the most obvious, adding a fertilizer. All of this is done in the hopes that the plant’s response, or its phenotypic alteration in response to its environment, creates additional yield and profit.

It’s Time to Rethink Your High Populations

Author: Jim Schwartz

While agricultural practices have changed over the last few decades, one factor has remained at the top of farmers minds: cost savings. As farmers, we’re great at finding new ways to save money, while still accomplishing our goals. And if we can increase profit while cutting expense costs, all the better! But what if we could continue to do this, but change our execution slightly to increase profits? Let’s talk about soybean seeding rate and row spacing.

2x2x2 Systems

The 2017 season proved to have enough challenges on its own without having to battle the $3.50 corn prices. Those challenges pushed us as farmers to think about more efficient and profitable ways to raise the highest yields possible, and utilizing different techniques and methods when making applications on our farms is a must.
