Here's to the Farmer

Last week, I had the opportunity to help with Beck’s PFR University. For those of you that don’t know, PFR University is a unique opportunity for farmers to visit Beck’s headquarters and spend two days learning and gaining additional PFR insights on new products and practices that they can then implement on their own farms.

Investing in Others: Beck's Professional Development Workshop

“Keeping and maintaining relationships is one of the most important things you can do in your career.”

Those are the words of Beck’s CEO, Sonny Beck. After last week, I would say that everyone in the 2017 intern class had the opportunity to connect and create relationships at the Intern Professional Development Workshop.

Home Sweet Home

They say time flies when you are having fun! I can’t believe how fast this summer has been going. Today I complete my sixth week interning at Beck’s, and I only have seven weeks left. Almost half way done…yikes! Before I know it I will be hitting the library and books for one last semester in Bloomington.

As I reflect back on the past few weeks, I realize how comfortable I’ve become here at Beck’s. Atlanta is starting to feel more and more like home, and I can honestly say it’s because of the people I work with.

The Power of Asking Questions

At the end of the semester, my professor sent out a summer reading list of books that he believes that every young professional needs to read. Now I know what you are thinking…it sounds horrible right? Who wants to read a bunch of nonfiction business books over summer vacation? Trust me, I would much rather be catching up by Nicholas Sparks, or curdled up at the lake with People magazine. But, as I have finished a few of the books, I have found them all to be insightful and relatable, especially during my internship at Beck’s.

How I Got to Beck's

Hi, I’m Marissa, the summer marketing intern at Beck’s. I guess you could call me the “black sheep” of this year’s intern class. Growing up in Fort Wayne, IN, I lived in a suburban neighborhood the majority of life. My mom worked in the healthcare field and my dad owned his own business. I never participated in any 4-H activities and honestly, I didn’t even know what FFA was until my senior year of high school. Cream and crimson runs through my blood (there’s a lot of black and gold alumni) and I can vividly remember growing up wearing my IU cheerleading uniform and rooting for Indiana basketball. I received my acceptance letter to IU in the fall of my senior year to pursue a degree in business and I never looked back.

Experiencing a Sales Internship

Author: Celina Young

When many people think of an internship in agriculture, they probably think of sales. At Beck’s, these interns have the opportunity to travel the Midwest and learn a wide variety of skills while working in the field. This week, I reached out to a few of our sales interns to tell me about some of the exciting things that they get to do on a daily basis.

My Interview with Sonny Beck

Author: Celina Young

A few weeks ago, I had the unique opportunity to have a conversation with Sonny Beck, CEO of Beck’s. Going into this meeting, my goal was to uncover what it was about this company’s leadership that has allowed Beck’s to help farmers succeed for almost 80 years. I could not have prepared myself for the direction the conversation would go. Sonny shared various stories about his role in the company over the years, as well as passing along some inspiration and words of wisdom. Now, I’d like to pass that advice along to you.

The Life of a Beck’s Research Intern

Author: Celina Young

This summer, ten college students from the across the Beck’s marketing area have joined the team as research interns. Divided between four Beck’s locations from Indiana to Iowa, they are gaining experience while learning in a hands-on environment. From planting test plots to collecting real data in the field, each intern has a unique experience to share. Today, we’ll catch up with four of these individuals as they progress through their internships.

Life Lessons and Personal Development

Author: Celina Young

“Having a project and opportunities for personal development are what makes an internship different from summer work.” Those are the words of Beck’s intern coordinator, Samantha Miller.

After last week, I would say that mission is accomplished! For two days, Beck’s 30 summer interns came together in Atlanta, Indiana for a chance to network and improve ourselves through various sessions.

The event was packed full with a wide variety of opportunities, from assessing how we work with others, to a Q&A with Beck’s President and CEO. This is just one of the many ways that Beck’s invests in their interns. I learned a lot in this time, but I wanted to share some of my key takeaways with you.

Agriculture is a Family Affair

Author: Celina Young

Family is a huge part of the company culture here at Beck’s. We pride ourselves on being family owned, faith based, and farmer focused. I have been fortunate to be part of the Beck’s family this summer, but after over a month here, I was happy to go home and see my own family this weekend. As I traversed through Iowa, visiting cousins and grandparents, I began to notice something. From seeing the family farm, to tractor rides across the state, I realized how much my family’s agricultural background is a part of who we are.

Playing Production Intern for a Day

Author: Celina Young

Being a Beck’s Production Intern is far more than just scouting fields. I found this out for myself when I had a chance to tag along with Kaitlin and Brandt, two of this year’s interns, earlier this week. In just a few short hours, I got an up-close look at Beck’s Production Agronomy Department.

Just a City Girl, Living in…Indiana.

Author: Celina Young

My hometown is not exactly a city, but with a population of over 10,000 people, I can’t really call myself a “small town girl” either. I’ve only ever lived three places in my life. Before we moved to my hometown of Waverly, Iowa, we lived 20 minutes to the south in Waterloo (which really is a city), and as a student at Iowa State University, I live in the bustling college town of Ames. Now I find myself somewhere completely new.

Having never lived outside of Iowa, moving eight hours away from home to intern for Beck’s has been a little scary. Now that I have lived in Indiana for about a month, I have made a few observations.

Top 5 Tips for Succeeding in the First Week of Your Internship

Author: Celina Young

Just a few days ago, I showed up to Beck’s headquarters, having mixed feelings about the first day of my summer internship. As excited as I was to be part of this family, I couldn’t help but be apprehensive. I had only ever lived in Iowa, so spending the next three months eight hours away from everything I am familiar with was a bit intimidating.

Photo Friday

Remember the first big purchase you made all by yourself? The first thing you spent your money on after saving for months? I do. For hours, I would compare every make and model of DSLR. The day my dad drove me to the camera store to make my investment is as clear as yesterday. I bought a brand new Canon T2i Rebel all on my own. Now, it travels with me from state to state and I've been fascinated by photography ever since.

Adrenaline and Professional Development

Zoom! Zoom! Zoooooooom! The go-carts flew past us as we cheered them on through each turn. A new wave of adrenaline hit each time the leader sped by, the rush of air cooling my sweaty face. Once the checkered flag of the final race waved, winners were awarded their trophies, and it was time to hit the hay. We’d had a full day. More activities filled the agenda for the next.

What If and Why

We pulled in the gravel driveway just as the sun was starting to get warm. I hopped out of the truck excitedly and took a moment to enjoy the gorgeous flower beds around me. In the fields beyond the flowers, unfamiliar crops waved in the gentle breeze. The sound of Chelsea’s introductions snapped me out of my Monday morning day dreams.

Who I Am: A Father's Day Tribute

I was meandering through unfamiliar Indiana back roads when Jessica Andrews’ hit, Who I Am came blaring through my speakers. Between missing Iowa a tinge and being in a thoughtful mood, I couldn’t help but change the words to fit my story.

The Road Less Traveled By

Familiar faces clutter the desk behind tall stacks of manila folders. The modest office faintly smells of old books. Cramped handwriting in red ink fills a thinning legal pad balanced on the keyboard. Faded children’s artwork curls with age as it’s proudly displayed on a gray file cabinet. Dated school portraits are tucked in the corners of framed wildlife prints. A smiling photo of a late mentor looks over it all.

Blessed with the Best

Blessed with the best! This title may seem like a sappy photo caption or cliché hashtag rather than the introduction to a post reflecting on the first three weeks of internships at Beck’s, but bear with me. I’m totally serious. In making friends with Beck’s 50 interns from 18 different schools, we’ve determined we really have been blessed with the best internship experience. Here’s why:
