PFR Report: In-Season Nitrogen Management

Author: Jim Schwartz

With prominent wet conditions this past fall and spring, switching to more in-season nitrogen management programs is a task many farmers are faced with this year. So what options are available for in-season nitrogen application? Beck’s Practical Farm Research (PFR)® team has past data on yield-gaining nitrogen management programs. One new product we are testing this year is PinnitMax™, a nitrogen stabilizer product.

PFR Report: Pour Some Sugar On Me...

Ooh, in the name of photosynthesis

Author: Jim Schwartz

Pouring sugar…on plants? What kind of madness is this?

Not madness at all! Plants need sugar for carbohydrate transport, energy, and stored fuel. Carbohydrates in the form of simple sugars, like glucose, are converted to complex sugars by means of starches. When this conversion process occurs in plants, better growth + development, improved regulation of various biological systems, as well as respiration & transpiration steps can occur. Graphic 1 (below) shows the process of photosynthesis.

What’s New in the World of Wheat?

When it comes to winter wheat production in the Midwest, sometimes get “stuck in rut” with our yields. Unlike corn and soybeans, wheat management is often put on the backburner in both time and investment into our crop. However, at Beck’s Southern Illinois PFR site, the winter wheat followed by soybean double crop system has produced some of our largest returns on investment over the last several years. So, the question arises, will this trend continue?

PFR Report: Why Water Management?

What Three Years on a Clay Pan Soil Has Taught Us

Author: Joe Bolte

What has three years of implementing water management practices at our Practical Farm Research (PFR)® facility in southern Illinois (SIL) taught us? That in environments that struggle with drainage, tile has payed dividends. Despite the common belief that tile does not work on clay pan soils, our data has proved otherwise.

So, the question is, why did tile work? To gain a better understanding, we must first dig deeper into the soil moisture and temperature data we have gathered over the past three years with CropX LLC moisture sensors.

Soybean Row Width and Population Study

For years, soybeans have not received the same love that corn has, and is often referred to as “that crop between corn crops.” It’s not uncommon for many farmers to plant all their corn before even thinking about starting on soybeans, and in most cases, the care or precision dedicated to soybean fields is nowhere near what it is when planting corn. Recently, however, some of the more progressive farmers throughout the Midwest have been giving soybeans a little more love.

Wheat Planting Date and Row Width

Unlike corn and soybeans, there hasn't been a lot of work done to determine the optimum planting date, row width or populations for wheat. Until now. Beck’s PFR started their Wheat Planting Date Study in 2017 and will be continuing that study, along with a row width and population study this year.

Corn Planting Depth by Date

Author: Jim Schwartz

Planting depth for row crops is a main topic of discussion in the agricultural community. Beck’s PFR team has heard your questions and in response, has put planting depth to yet another test. You may have seen our planting depth data over the last few years, but this year we added a second planting date into the mix. For this study, we planted corn in April and in May. In April, we tend to see cooler, wetter soils whereas in May we sometimes experience drier periods with less rainfall and warmer soil temperatures. Soil temperature and moisture have a great effect on how plants emerge. In this study, we looked to evaluate how much soil conditions can affect plant emergence, and how much yield potential we lose with late-emerging plants.
