November 2011: Beck’s announces a new corn trialing system now known as Genetic Choice Trials. But what are Genetic Choice Trials? They are our world-class, pre-commercial corn mini strip yield trials set up in four 40 ft. long rows and replicated multiple times.

I hope you have learned through our Research Series videos and Myth Busters blogs that Beck’s prides itself in offering diversity and choices in our product lineup. This diversity comes from selecting regional products that fit specifically what our customers need in their farming operation, as well as selecting genetics and traits from industry suppliers in addition to our own corn breeding program.
Hi, I’m Doug Clouser. I’d like to welcome you back to our Beck’s Research: Myth Busters blog series. Because we offer genetics and traits from some of our competitors, we sometimes hear rumors Beck’s only gets the “floor sweepings” and leftover products that they didn’t want anyway. But this simply is not true. Let me explain why.

Very rarely can you have a great day of both reaping and sowing. I suppose there are some days in late June and early July where you can cut a wonderful crop of wheat, and then turn around and put in some double crop soybeans into perfect conditions. Or there are probably a few days in the fall where soybeans are coming out and wheat is going in.
But none of these agricultural examples can live up to the amazing day of reaping and sowing I was exposed to this weekend.

Have you ever thought about how many steps you take in a day? Or even tracked it using a pedometer or Fitbit? You may not notice on a day-to-day basis, but it’s amazing how far you go with in a few short weeks.

My wife Sarah and I have been talking for quite some time about walking the Monon Trail. For those around Central Indiana, you will know of the Monon as a reclaimed railroad that has been turned into a trail for running, walking and bicycling. To say we wanted to walk the Monon is a little ambiguous, because there are many entry and exit points to the trail, and there are many stretches of the Monon one could walk.

Well I didn't really know how to spell the title of my blog, but I wanted it to sound very much like the excited television announcer announcing a world cup soccer game. I recently watched my first world cup match (well okay, I watched about 20 minutes of the over 90 minute match) and was very excited when the U.S. scored a late goal and came out with the victory.

“What we measure tends to improve.” Francis Beck regarded that quote as one of his favorites.
I am not sure who originally said this, or if this is even the original way in which it was stated. But what I have learned over my career here at Beck’s, and especially the last year or two, is that this is definitely a sentiment that I believe in.

I know nobody is going to believe it, but I just recently turned 40. You are probably thinking, surely he is way older than 40, isn’t he? But my wife decorated my office with the normal black balloons and other paraphernalia that is supposed to make you feel old, so I am sure it was my 40th. Although it didn’t work as I feel much younger physically than I did 10 years ago when I turned 30. I mentioned in an earlier blog how I had lost some weight recently, and I am much more active than I was a year or two ago, so physically I feel much younger on my 40th birthday than I have on my last several birthdays.

I am sure many of you are a bit stir crazy as am I from all of the very wintery days we have had this year. I know there are many out there that will tell me I am wrong, but this has to be the most snow and cold we have had in a winter in many years, if not decades.
With all of the winter we have been having, I have tried to pull my thoughts toward spring. The product team has been working on our new products for next year already and that has been a great opportunity to be thinking about a warmer time.

I’ll be honest, I was putting off writing my blog today because I wasn’t sure exactly what subject to focus on. So instead of grabbing my laptop and trying to type something up, I watched a movie instead. The movie was about a woman that was battling to become sober. She found that many things and people seemed to be stacked against her efforts to become sober. Despite those many obstacles, the movie ended up with her celebrating her one year anniversary of sobriety.
As I watched the movie, I felt a definite inspiration for my blog coming over me. You see, over the last year I have been fortunate to lose over 100 pounds! I am very proud of my accomplishment, but my true inspiration for today’s blog is the unbelievable amount of support I have received over this journey of losing weight.

What a busy time of year for athletic competitions. Here in central Indiana there are so many choices to keep you preoccupied with tremendous events. Some seasons are winding down (such as volleyball and the high school football tournament that just took place) while other seasons like basketball are just getting started.

When you work at a company for nearly 20 years, you gain lots of stories. From humorous to heartfelt, many of the stories I’ve gained are actually learning experiences. My name is Doug Clouser and I’m the product lead at Beck’s Hybrids. I’ve been a part of the research team since 1996.
I’ll admit this first blog has me a little nervous. I can speak and write for days on product information, product placement, or even technologies. This whole idea of entertaining or educating in a blog format is a bit outside my comfort level.
