From Our Family Farm to Yours

Intern Avenue

More Than Miles

Published on Friday, October 17, 2014

The “gypsy life” is a lifestyle that I am beginning to understand very well. This week, I found myself making several trips between school, home, and the beautiful back roads of Indiana. While on the road, I was lucky enough to have a special copilot with me—my grandfather, Gary.

Until I was five, my family lived in town, but often spent time out at the farm with grandparents. I remember walking through fields and playing back in the woods. These activities were ones I often looked forward to growing up.

From playing in the sand to protesting something, Gramp has always been a major part of my life.

After moving back to the farm, my grandparents were only a pasture field away, which led to many visits and adventures over the past 15 years.

Going away to college and spending the summer away from home has made me appreciate the essence of time a lot more. It was once said that sometimes you do not know the true value of a moment until it is a memory. Reflecting on this week makes this statement feel very true for me.

Four hours spent in a vehicle can be a nuisance to some. But for me, four hours wasn’t long enough to talk with my grandfather. Gramp and I spent hours just talking about everything, from the crops in the field to our mutual love for chocolate brownies. I listened to stories of his childhood and of his days spent farming. It is days like this that make me realize what’s really important.

I owe much of who I am today to this god-fearing, agricultural-loving man I affectionately call Gramp. Thank you for making my road trips less long and my memories most fond.
