“Keeping and maintaining relationships is one of the most important things you can do in your career.”
Those are the words of Beck’s CEO, Sonny Beck. After last week, I would say that everyone in the 2017 intern class had the opportunity to connect and create relationships at the Intern Professional Development Workshop.
For two days, Beck’s 31 interns came together for a chance to improve their professional skills through various sessions, and also catch up with fellow interns. The sessions were packed full of activities to help us further develop our skills. The activities ranged from practicing and improving our interview skills, to helping Habitat for Humanity with a community service project. We even got to attend a cookout at Scott Beck’s house that included clay target shooting and an intense game of water volleyball.
After the service project, we had the chance to visit at Scott’s house for an intern social.
This is just another way that Beck’s invests in their interns. I learned a lot during those two days, but one of the main takeaways is how Beck’s Attitudes and Actions resonates in every aspect of the company. They include: teamwork, integrity, innovation, adaptability, commitment and passion. All of these characteristics combine to create Beck’s company culture.
Here are a few of the main takeaways I learned from the workshop and how each of the activities incorporated Beck’s Attitudes and Actions.
Together We Can Do So Much:
Last week we got the chance to help a family in need during our workshop. Habitat for Humanity was building a house in Cicero, IN and needed our help. All 31 interns gladly put on hardhats and went to work. We demonstrated innovation in the building process, when we created an assembly line to more efficiently hammer the walls. With all of us working as a team, we were able to accomplish all of the tasks given to us in under two hours. It was a humble experience knowing that we helped a couple provide a home for their family. Our teamwork truly helped the community that day.
All of the interns had the chance to help build a house for a family in need in Cicero, IN.
Learn About Yourself:
Before you can become a great team player, it’s important to reflect on your own personality. We did this in one of the sessions by taking the DiSC personality assessment. This assessment allows you to understand the four different personalities, and how to better interact with people in the workplace.
At first, I was a little freaked out how accurate the test was. It took a lot of adaptability to be able to speak to the group about your strengths and weaknesses, but I soon realized this test could help me overcome conflict and obstacles with fellow employees someday.
Each personality group had to get in front of the intern class and talk about their strengths and weaknesses.
Learn from Others:
To wrap up our professional development workshop, we had time with Sonny Beck for a Q&A session. It was eye-opening to see how committed and passionate he is about this company. For over an hour, we got to ask any question about him, the company, or the industry. One of my biggest takeaways from the session was how important the employees at Beck’s are. Sonny talked a lot about relying on others and how important it is to keep relationships with everyone keeps the company moving forward. He also talked about how this internship is an opportunity for us to figure out what we want to do down the road and will serve as a great asset to our future endeavors.

Though I was exhausted at the end of the week, I learned more about the company and also about myself. Despite being the largest family-owned seed company, Beck’s continues to invest in their employees keeping the focus on faith, family values, and ultimately, having the integrity to help farmers succeed.
