How to Get the Most Out of Liberty® Herbicide

Published on Tuesday, July 05, 2016

At the moment, Liberty® (glufosinate) is the only post-emergence herbicide available to control glyphosate and PPO-resistant Palmer amaranth and waterhemp. So naturally, we need this herbicide to perform to the best of its ability. There are a few things you can do to enhance the efficacy of your LibertyLink® herbicide program. Below I have outlined the best management practices for post-emergence Liberty applications.

Time of Day: Liberty works best when weeds are actively growing in warm temperatures with high humidity and in bright sunlight.

Liberty sprayed at 7 a.m.                     Liberty sprayed at 3 p.m.

Carrier Volume: Liberty is primarily a contact herbicide that has very little systemic activity. This means that the better coverage, the better kill. It is important to spray a minimum of 15 gal./A., but if a dense weed canopy is present, bump it up to 20 gal./A.

      Liberty & Select® sprayed at 20 gal./A.      Liberty & Select® sprayed at 11 gal./A.

Additives: Ammonium sulfate at a rate between 1.5 and 3 lb./A. has shown to improve control of some difficult-to-control weeds.

Liberty is an excellent broadleaf herbicide, but it can be weak on grasses at times. The addition of Select® or any clethodim-based product can help with control of grass.

Liberty is rainfast in four hours, but under adverse weather conditions, it should not be sprayed within six hours of expected rain. Keep in mind, the yearly total of Liberty is 65 oz./A. and no more than 36 oz./A. may be sprayed in a single application. Sequential applications of Liberty 5 to 10 days apart may be needed to control larger, tough-to-control weeds such as Palmer amaranth or common waterhemp.

Click here to view Bayer’s “Application Guidelines for LibertyLink Soybeans”. I would suggest printing it off and keeping it in the sprayer for a quick reference.

Don’t hesitate to contact myself or your local Beck’s representative with any questions.
