CropTalk: The Sower

June 2022

I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth. (I Corinthians 3:6-7)

One Sunday morning, I read a text from late the night before. A friend with a pie shop across from the church had 12 leftover pies and offered them up to anyone at church who wanted them. I said a little prayer and asked God for direction on the pies. During morning worship, I challenged our congregation to pray for God to lay on their hearts someone to bless with a pie. After service, my friend told me that all 12 pies were gone in seven minutes. She was so excited that they would be shared with others as a blessing. It was not long until I started hearing the stories of those 12 pies: neighbors reconnecting, relationships renewed, and joy over being ‘thought of.’ Then, there was the coconut cream pie delivered to someone battling cancer. This person thought they would be coming home, but that didn’t happen, so the pie went to the hospital instead. As it turns out, coconut cream was their favorite pie (the person taking the pie had no idea – but God did). Boom! Blessed! But the story did not end there. The person who delivered the pie attended a horse show the following Saturday. Many participants stayed the night, but this person wanted to be in church the next day to share the coconut pie story, so they told everyone they had to head home after the show. Hearing that, all those friends (40 people or so) wanted to hear the pie story, too. It became a blessing, upon blessing, upon blessing. It was shared, seeds were planted, and God took it from there. And it all started with 12 pies…
