Late Wheat Planting

Agronomy Update

Published on Friday, November 19, 2021

Aaron Brooker, Beck’s Hybrids Field Sales Agronomist, discusses late planting wheat management decisions for mid-November.

  • Planting Population: 1.2-2.2 million wheat seeds/acre recommendation. Earlier planting = lower seeding rates. Later planting = higher seeding rates.
  • Planting Depth = 1.0-inch depth to help the wheat emerge and start the tillering process this fall.
  • Weather: Be aware of the impacts of cold weather on late-planted wheat. The value of Beck’s seed treatment can help improve the seed’s health in cold soils.
  • Nitrogen Application: Some recommend 20 lbs./A. for late-planted fall wheat to encourage early growth and tillering. If there isn’t time for fall nitrogen applications, spring applications of nitrogen will help increase wheat tiller growth.
  • Scouting: As always, continue to scout fields for any problematic areas. Reach out to your local Beck’s representative with any questions.
