Early season growing conditions can be conducive to disease development. This is especially true as corn and soybean planting dates move earlier in the growing season to maximize yields. Early season stresses caused by cool, water-logged soils can lead to increased incidence of diseases. This is especially true of Pythium in corn, and Pythium and Phytophthora in soybeans. These diseases will often be more prevalent in low lying areas of the field or areas that are compacted, leading to poor drainage. Make sure to evaluate the entire field when looking for overall stand quality.Today’s hybrids and varieties have very good tolerance to disease. This coupled with excellent seed treatments products such as Escalate™ give plants extra survival protection. However, remember to evaluate stand and early growth as you are walking your fields this spring. If you find something that looks like a concern, please call your local Beck’s dealer, seed advisor, or field agronomist to determine the cause as it may provide a learning opportunity for future seed or agronomic decisions.
